National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS)

Established by the Ministry of Education, Government of India in 1989, NIOS is one of the largest open schooling systems globally. A certificate from NIOS is equivalent to CBSE/ICSE and is fully valid for all university entries and jobs across India and abroad.

NIOS Class 10th Admission Eligibility

  • Required Document: Class 10th Failed mark sheets / Admit card or Birth Certificate.
  • Identity: Aadhaar Card is compulsory (with supporting local address proof).
  • TOC (Transfer of Credit): Original failed mark sheets of class 10th/12th from other boards (CBSE, BSEB) to carry over marks.
  • Class 12th Entry: Candidate must be at least 15 years old and hold a secondary level clear marksheet.
  • Category Proof: Caste certificates for SC/ST/OBC and Disability certificates (if applicable).

Documents Required for NIOS Registration

  • Active Email ID and Mobile number.
  • Address proof (Aadhaar, electricity bill, water bill, or ration card).
  • Original failed mark sheets of previous board (for TOC/credit transfer).
  • Social category/Caste certificate (in case of SC/ST/OBC).
  • 4 recent passport-size colored photographs.

How to Apply for NIOS Admission

NIOS registrations are conducted online. The examinations are conducted twice a year in April-May and October-November. Learners are required to select subjects, upload valid documents, and pay the registration and exam fees online through the official student portal.
